THE Davao City Council on Tuesday approved on first reading a resolution seeking the closure of all poultry and hog farms in Sirawan, Toril, citing health effects on nearby residents.
The City Council's move was in response to a letter of request from Alem Omar Abdullah of the Council of Elders of Kalagan/Muslim Community in Sirawan dated June 8 requesting the closure of the farms due to health hazards.

"The poultry and hog farms located at Barangays Sirawan emit foul odor as well as pose serious health risk. The obnoxious and foul odor emanating from the farms compromising the quality of the life of the community," Abdullah said in his letter to the City Council.
Abdul said the foul odor from the farms even reaches neighboring places adding that this has been the perennial problem of their community. He added that the foul odor becomes worse during the rainy season.
Barangay Sirawan has been classified as residential zone under the Revised Zoning Ordinance of Davao City.
The group has opposed the proposal of owners of hog and poultry farms to reclassify their area into an industrial zone.
