Local cops, army find ceasefire okay for Xmas

Monday, December 12, 2011

BOTH the police and the military in Davao Region welcome a ceasefire for the holidays, but only if the National Government will declare such.

Major General Jorge V. Segovia, commander of the Philippine Army's 10th Infantry Division, said the government troops are also open to the resumption of the peace negotiation between the Government of the Philippines and National Democratic Front (GPH-NDF).

But Segovia said they are still waiting for the National Government to announce it, adding a unilateral ceasefire would be better not only for the government troops and communist group, but also for the people so that everyone can rest from the violence around the country.

“We hope that others would cooperate and do the same too. Kung pwede nga lang araw-araw ceasefire para magkaroon na ng kapayapaan sa Pilipinas,” Segovia said.

Chief Superintendent Jorge Corpuz, Police Regional Office (PRO) deputy regional director for administration, for its part, said while there is no total suspension of police operations or suspension of military operations (somo/sopo), they will abide by what the National Government will declare.

“It feels good to spend time with your love ones without any criminalities or atrocities around,” Corpuz said.

Corpuz made it clear that any ceasefire will not stop them from doing their job “to protect the people and to serve the country.”

“Rest assured that the military and police are always on full alert not only during Christmas, dahil tungkulin namin yan,” Corpuz said. (ICT)
