City alerts village execs on weather disturbance

Monday, February 13, 2012

THE Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DCDRRMC) has alerted anew all barangays for calamities that may be brought by the weather disturbance affecting the southern Mindanao.

Retired Colonel Mario Verner Monsanto, executive officer of the DCDRRMC, in its advisory dated February 10, alerted all barangay captains in the city on the weather disturbance sighted Friday last week.

"You are hereby directed to monitor the situation and undertake precautionary measures in your areas of responsibility," Monsanto told all disaster response units in the barangay level.

The alert has been specifically issued for low-lying areas that are more prone to flooding.

"You are all advised to be on standby and be prepared for mobilization on request. Monitor the situation within your area of responsibility," Monsanto added.

Based on the latest weather update from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) stationed in Davao City as of Monday morning, the low pressure area sighted last Friday has already dissipated.

Pagasa, however, still warned residents living in landslide or flashflood-prone areas to be alert on all possibilities.

On Monday afternoon, nearly 100 barangay captains of the 182 barangays in Davao City convened to discuss action plans and the possibilities of landslide incidents in their localities.

The forum was attended mostly by barangay captains from areas which are highly susceptible to incidents due to bad weather. (Jereco O. Paloma)
