Barangay polls to push through next year-A A +A

WITH more important measures now pending in Congress, moves to postpone the 2013 barangay elections could hardly be passed, said a Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) official in Davao City.
Merilo Q. Limbaro, DILG-Davao City chief, said he sees no reason to delay the elections since Congress is not pushing for any measure postponing the barangay elections to another date.
"Mao man gyud na ang kasagarang i-rason nila, labo na sa katong gusto ma extend ilang termino nga kunohay wala pa na implementar ilang mga programa (That's really the usual excuse that some politicians use especially when they want to prolong their term -- thay they are not done with their programs yet)," Limbaro said.
Cebu City Representative Rachel "Cutie" del Mar has filed a House Bill calling for the postponement of barangay elections from 2013 to 2014.
A congressman from Mindanao, Rofus Rodriguez, also filed a separate House Bill also calling for the postponement of barangay polls.
But unlike del Mar, Rodriguez wanted to move the 2013 barangay polls to October of 2015.
These congressmen wanted to give enough time to incumbent barangay officials to finish their pending projects and programs and for the government to save millions of pesos as election expenses.
But the suggestions of the representatives who have called for the deferment of the barangay polls did not sit well with Limbaro.
"They must leave (unfinished projects) to the upcoming officials to finish the project, after all, the money will not be lost if the project is already there," Limbaro said.
