DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has issued a proclamation declaring the month of August as "Buwan ng Wika" in Davao City.

In her newly issued Proclamation 07 dated July 11, Duterte-Carpio emphasized the importance of mother language to the development and success of a country and a city, in particular.

The proclamation was in accordance with the 1987 Constitution, citing the importance of native language to the country's development as well as with Proclamation 1041, series of 1997 issued by then President Fidel V. Ramos that emphasizes the importance of recognizing the native language.

"Ang isang katutubong wikang panlahat ay mahalagang kasangkapan sa komunikasyon, pagkakaunawaan, kaisahan, at kaunlaran (The native language in general is an important tool for communication, understanding, unity, and progress)," Duterte-Carpio said in the proclamation.

The month of August was declared as Buwan ng Wika because the country's father of national language and a former president of the Philippines, Manuel L. Quezon, was born on August 19, 1878. (JOP)
