DAVAO CITY Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte expressed on Sunday his support to newly-appointed Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, saying he believes the first woman chief justice has the capability to attend to her duties well given her outstanding credentials.
The new chief justice is married to Mario Jose Sereno of the Porras-Aledia-Sereno clan of Davao City.
"I think she will make a very good chief justice. The first woman at that," he said in his regular Sunday program "Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa.
Duterte said he is impressed by the track record of Sereno, adding that the chief justice "has great credentials" with her previous jobs before assuming the post of former chief justice Renato Corona, who was impeached and convicted for betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Constitution.
He also said being a former associate justice of the Supreme Court is another advantage of Sereno, making it easier for her to bring about reforms to the judicial system in the country.
Sereno already took oath as chief justice of the highest court before President Benigno Aquino III at the Malacañang Palace on Saturday.
