IN COMBATING dengue through massive education and information campaign, the City Health Office (CHO) of Davao said each Dabawenyo plays a vital role in cleaning their own areas to arrest the increase of dengue cases in the city.
In an interview, Elizabeth Banzon, tropical unit coordinator of CHO, said the behavior of every household in preventing dengue must also be emphasized.
"Dili man nato sila hawak tanan oras. Kami, naningkamot nami ug taman nga labanan gyud ning dengue, so dapat ang mga tag balay pud maningkamot (We cannot control them all the time. We are doing our best to fight dengue so each household should also do their part)," Banzon told Sun. Star Davao on Thursday.
She said each household should observe the "4 o'clock Habit" search and destroy breeding places, seek early treatment, self-protective measures and say yes to fogging during outbreaks. She said this should be done every day and not only every Friday, which most people do.
Data from Department of Health’s (DOH) Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (Resu) showed that Davao Region posted a total of 6,816 suspected dengue cases from January to September 8 this year, which reflects an increase of 145 percent from last year's 2,781 cases.
Of 6,816 suspected dengue cases, 5,046 were recorded in Davao City.
Davao del Norte comes next with 660 suspected cases, Davao Oriental with 459 suspected cases, Compostela Valley (Comval) with 422 suspected cases, and Davao del Sur with 229 suspected cases.
The DOH on Wednesday intensified its anti-dengue by distributing Olyset-treated curtains and ovicidal-larvicidal (OL Traps) in 30 barangays in Davao City.
Engr. Antonietta Ebol, regional Malaria and Dengue program manager of DOH, earlier said these 30 villages belong to the top six dengue hotspots in the city by geographical district.
The alarming number of dengue cases prompted the DOH to intensify its efforts especially in dengue hotspots like Talomo North, Talomo South, Buhangin, Bunawan, and Poblacion areas.
