THE City Engineers Office (CEO) has started demolition works on the 25-year-old Ubalde barangay hall located in the middle of the exit road from SM Lanang Premier to R. Castillo Street.
Engineer Roland Reyes, acting CEO Chief, said the demolition of the old barangay hall is 70 percent complete as of Wednesday afternoon.
Reyes said they are hoping that by Friday, they will be able to complete the entire demolition project, which was slightly late in time for the opening of SM Lanang mall.
Construction of the access road to R. Castillo will commence after the demolition.
The grand opening of SM Lanang Friday has caused traffic congestion along J.P Laurel Avenue.
Retired Colonel Desiderio Cloribel, Traffic Management Center (TMC) chief, earlier attributed the bumper-to-bumper traffic situation along the area to the delayed demolition of the barangay hall.
"Depende kung ma connect na ang (It will depend if we can connect the) transition from Ubalde road to SM," Reyes said when asked if by the new access road will be passable to motorists by Saturday.
Fortunately, Reyes said, there has been no resistance from officials and residents of Barangay Ubalde when they started the demolition last Monday.
Cloribel, for his part, said after the first three days of the mall's opening, the traffic situation has started to normalize.
"Expect light to heavy traffic situation when any of the malls invites celebrities from Manila," Cloribel said.
Cloribel, however, said the opening of the access road going out from the mall will be very important in normalizing the traffic congestion along J.P Laurel especially during rush hours.
"There is already an additional trip generation now compared before but not too congested, if one potential conflict is avail the opening of the access road," Cloribel said.
Cloribel added that another factor that can mitigate the congestion at the Lanang road is to widen the existing Damosa road and re-design geometric angle on Damosa corners.
Barangay Ubalde now has a newly-built two-storey building donated by the SM Lanang management.
