SOME 201 newly-hired Local School Board (LSB) guards will be deployed in various elementary and secondary public schools in Davao City.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said they wrapped up the LSB approval for school guards in all public schools last February 1 because of security concerns.
Duterte-Carpio said they have to intensify security measures in schools after entry of alleged Malaysian Jemaah Islamiya (JI) bomber in the city and other terrorist issues that include several bomb scares, shooting incident and theft inside schools.
The mayor said this is also part of the city's anti-drug campaign.
She said that starting this month, there are 118 new LSB school guards with endorsements, and another 83 without endorsements yet.
She said the new LSB school guards will augment the more than 262 existing guards being paid by the City Government of Davao.
She said school principals are required to submit the name of the security guard they wish to be deployed in their schools.
"I-train and mag-orientation pa sila. That's the reason ang principal ang ginapa-recommend sa guard to ensure na someone responsible enough ilaha i-submit as nominee," Duterte-Carpio said during sidelines of the Philippine Councilors League welcome dinner at the SMX Convention Center Tuesday night.
She said the LSB school guards will be paid through the Special Education Fund.
The local chief executive's recommendation before the LSB to deploy at least one security guard from the City Government for each public school was duly approved by the board.
She said if the Parent Teacher Community Association (PTCA) wants to partner with the city, it can also deploy at least one guard to make it two guards.
"Hopefully, PTCA will step up and mag counterpart ug ilaha," she said.
When asked of how long the school guards will be deployed, she said it will depend on the next school board if they will still continue with this.
Based on the record of the Department of Education, Davao City has a total number of 287 elementary and 75 high schools.
