THERE will be no grand opening ceremony this time for the Araw ng Dabaw celebration.
Lisette Marquez, festival director of Duaw Dabaw Foundation, said the 76th edition of the city's founding anniversary will kick off with a simple rite on February 25 at the City Hall grounds.
"Short presentation lang, considering that work day yan and it's in the morning," said Marquez, adding that the kick off will be held during the regular Monday flag-raising ceremony.
Duaw Dabaw is one of the private partners of the City Government of Davao for this year's celebration.
The foundation set aside P5.2 million for the various events it will handle, including the opening program, Mutya ng Dabaw, Araw ng Dabaw Talent Competitions (Sayaw Pinoy, Saywan sa Da'n, Laban Labandz), and Hudyakaan sa Araw ng Dabaw.
On the other hand, the executive committee of the City Government of Davao still has to decide whether the entire celebration of 76th Araw ng Dabaw will be extravagant or simple.
Orly Escarilla, festival director and official spokesperson, said the execom is expected to convene next week to discuss matters pertaining to the celebration, one of which will be the budget.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio signed on Monday Executive Order No. 02-Series of 2013, which constitutes the Joint Executive Committee of the 76th Araw ng Dabaw Celebration and 2013 Davao Summer Festival.
This year's festival will commence on February 25 with various events and activities to be staged right after. The festivity will culminate on March 16.
"In order to help ensure the success of the 76th Araw ng Dabaw and the 2013 Davao Summerfest, there is a need to involve the private sector in staging some of the events to augment the limited resources of the public sector," the EO read.
The official events handled by the City Government are the 76th Araw ng Dabaw Appreciation Program, 76th Araw ng Dabaw Athletes Recognition Program, Araw ng Dabaw Sportsfest, Davao City Hall Employees Association Sportsfest, Parada Dabawenyo and Datu Bago Awards.
Davao City Government allocated P8.2 million for the 75th Araw ng Dabaw celebration last year.
