THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Davao City needs 377 technicians who will assist the board of election inspectors (BEI) in the operation of the Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines during the May 13 midterm elections.

Lawyer Aimee F. Ampoloquio, first district election officer of Comelec-Davao City, said the poll body has been accepting applications since last week and had conducted an examination on Wednesday for the applicants.

Comelec-Davao City is eyeing graduates of courses such as Bachelor of Science in Information and Technology (BSIT) and Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCE) for the hiring of PCOS machine technicians.

Amploloquio said, however, that they also consider hiring graduating BSIT and BSCE students, and that even those applicants who have relevant trainings in such fields can qualify.

"Bahala'g students basta mopasa sa exam (Students will be qualified for as long as they pass the exam)," Ampoloquio said.

"Naa man pud ubang lugar nga walay mga IT graduates (There are other areas who don't have IT graduates)," she added.

For the city's first district, there were initially 83 applicants who took the examinations but only 56 passed the practical examination on personal computer peripheral.

Applicants must undergo two sets of examination such as an hour of written examination and practical examination wherein they have to eke out at least a passing score of 80 percent and seven to 10 ratings, respectively.

Practical examination will test the skills of applicants in setting up a computer.

Ampoloquio said she has no idea how many of those 377 PCOS technicians will be assigned per district pending notice from Comelec-Central Office in Manila.

Apart from assisting the BEIs, these PCOS technicians will be tasked to troubleshoot and attend to the problems of the PCOS machines and CF cards before and during the May 13 elections, according to Ampoloquio.

They will have to be present during final testing and sealing of PCOS machines, and especially during the transmission of election results.

The poll body will be posting the final list of hired PCOS technicians next week and will have to undergo further trainings to be conducted by the poll body's central office and the election officers.

There's no schedule yet as to when will the trainings be, the official said.

The submission of applications ended Friday.

Davao City has a total of 967,944 registered voters. Of the total, 415,882 voters are in first district, followed by 297,930 in second district and 254,132 in third district.
