KIDAPAWAN CITY - Some 50 fully-armed communist rebels held a former member of a paramilitary group for five hours in a remote village in Arakan, North Cotabato on Thursday, a military official said.

Lieutenant Nasrullah Sema, chief of the civil military operations of the 57th Infantry Battalion (IB), identified the victim as Hilario Cambel, former member of the Civilian Auxiliary Army under the 38th IB and a resident of Barangay Kabalantian, Arakan.

Citing initial investigations, Sema said the victim was forcibly taken inside his residence on Thursday, around 5 a.m.

The military official identified the group of Commander Jasmin of the Front Guerilla 53 of the Southern Mindanao Regional Command of the New Peoples’ Army (NPA) whose area of operations include towns of Arakan, Antipas, President Roxas, and the hinterlands of Magpet, all in North Cotabato, as behind the abduction.

Cambel was released after the rebels took his .45 caliber pistol.

The rebels also seized undetermined number of sacks of rice, which were stocked from the villagers' houses, and immediately left the area, on board a dump truck, according to Sema.

The truck was headed towards barangay White Kulaman in nearby Bukidnon, he said. The truck owner, reports added, was identified only as Engineer Embodo from Kidapawan City.

Sema condemned the abduction and the carting of bags of rice from the barangay.

"What they did was definitely wrong. They stole people’s food. Where is now their promise that they won’t steal the food and other things the poor owns? This is worse than corruption," Sema said.

Cambel's incident was the second in North Cotabato, since April.

On April 19, rebels seized PO2 Mike Ali in President Roxas town.

Ali's wife alleged that the suspects identified themselves as members of the NPA.

Sema said Jasmin's group of the NPA Front 53 earlier admitted they were responsible for Ali’s abduction.

"Pursuit operations against Jasmin's group are still ongoing," the military official said.
