THE Davao City Council will conduct an investigation on the alleged game-fixing in one of the matches during the Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Pulong Duterte Kadayawan Commercial Invitational Basketball Tournament.
Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte said he will soon refer the issue to the committee on sports, chaired by Councilor Jasheera Gonzales, as soon as they receive the official report from the City Sports Office headed by William "Butch" Ramirez.
Ramirez and the organizers of the tournament cancelled the announcement of winners due to a suspected manipulation of the during the Goldstar Hardware-Montaña Pawnshop clash Monday night.
He said they have given due process to the coaches of the two teams by validating what transpired in their game where the latter defeated Goldstar with scores of 72-65.
Lawyer Ruben Abarquez, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Davao Region legal counsel, said somebody has to be sanctioned for what transpired.
“There has to be action and sanction, otherwise, it will be like an act of surrender from the end of the organizers to discipline erring teams,” he said.
Abarquez added, “We cannot allow two teams to manipulate the game or choose their opponents. What happened was not good for basketball in Davao. We must attain purity of the sport.”
The coaches of the two teams, however, denied the allegation.
