TWO more members of the New People's Army (NPA) surrendered to government troops in Barangay Banahaw in Malungon in Saranggani Province, Thursday, an army official said.
Captain Raul Villegas, 10th Infantry Division’s spokesperson, identified the rebel surrenderees as Jun Calatao Balungan, alias Jun, 27, of Barangay Battalion, and Efren Ambong, 43, of Barangay Laguimit, both from Glan, Sarangani Province.
Villegas, in a text message, said the two were former members of the NPA's Yunit Militia from Malungon town in Saranggani Province. Both surrendered before the 72nd Infantry Battalion.
The rebel returnees also surrendered their firearms: 2 .30 caliber US Springfield rifles, 13 rounds of live ammunition, and one fragmentation hand grenade.
"In our interview with them, the two said that they decided to surrender due to their realization that they are not fighting for a cause but just joined a bandit group inflicting hardships to the populace," Villegas said.
Villegas said the two are still undergoing debriefing and will be recommended to benefit the program of the government to obtain monetary and livelihood assistance. He added that the government will provide the basic needs of the rebel returnees.
