DAVAO CITY -- Four persons were killed after the van they were riding collided with a passenger bus along the national highway in Lasang, Davao City, Monday morning.
The victims, who died on the spot, were identified as Anaclito Pedrosa Jr., 72, driver of the van; Miriam Flores, and Marites Adtuon.
The driver's daughter, Anamarie, 17, died before she reached Rivera Hospital in Panabo City.
Bunawan police traffic investigator Salvador Metran said the accident happened around 10:45 a.m.
Police investigation showed the Hi-Ace van was headed for Davao City from Panabo City, while the Bachelor Express bus, driven by Restituto Tudio Cordoa Jr., was travelling in the opposite direction.
The collision happened after the bus tried to encroach the other lane in Km. 27 in Lasang.
"Nakurat mi sa nahitabong pag-bangga. Mi-pilit ang van sa atubang sa bus, halos na dasok na gani sa ilawom unya kita mi na ang mga pasahero sa sulod sa van nangalagpot nalang sa gawas," Carlito Pas, who witnessed the incident, said in a radio interview.
Due to the strong impact, the three passengers were thrown outside of the van, while the driver was locked on his seat, the police said.
No one from the passengers of the bus was hurt, the police added.
Cordoa admitted that he tried to encroach on the other lane and did not expect there was a van approaching to that direction. The driver surrendered to the Bunawan Police Station.
The bodies of the three victims were brought to Rivera Funeral Parlor in Lasang, while Anamarie lies at the morgue of Rivera Hospital. (With reports from Jeepy P. Compio of Sun.Star Superbalita)
