Monday, August 26, 2013
This was the loud chant of more than 700 people coming from various organizations and schools as they rallied for the abolition of Priorities Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or “pork barrel” in Rizal Park Monday morning.
“This is to show the government that we, the people, are not dumb puppets and that we also analyze. We want to abolish the pork barrel,” said Sr. Alice Dumaboc of Sisters’ Association in Mindanao.
She said it saddens her that while those who were involved in corrupting pork barrel owns luxurious materials, many do not have slippers to wear, shelters to live and basic medicines that they need.
The people also expressed with loud voices their dismay on President Benigno Aquino III’s decision to reform rather than to abolish the PDAF.
“Mr. President, this makes us, your boss, very uneasy. We demand change, not just perfume on the stinking rat,” Ateneo de Davao University president Fr. Joel Tabora said in his speech in front of protesters.
He added that the people, whether they like it or not, pay taxes with their meager salaries.
“That is why today, we want the truth. The President is not exempted from our demands,” Tabora added.
The protesters ended the rally with an oath-taking ceremony, promising to continue the fight against PDAF and to never stop until the abolition of all opportunities where the government can steal.
The said rally was part of the nationwide protest known as the “Million People March.”
