KIDAPAWAN CITY -- Three members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) were killed in an encounter Saturday evening.
Brigadier General Ademar Tomaro, 602nd Brigade chief, said the BIFF attempted to enter Sitio Mirasol, Barangay Polongoguen, Midsayap but were spotted at 7:05 p.m. by the members of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu) and Civilian Volunteer Organization (CVO) who blocked the rebels.
The large number of BIFF forces led by Commander Eskak, alias King Size, prompted quick response from the forces of the 40th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army led by Colonel Robert Huet, alongside police officers.
Their encounter lasted for around two hours.
The loud gunfire caused civilians to disperse toward safe areas.
The rebels retreated after the military started to use an 81-mm mortar and a 90-rr bazooka.
No one from the military, Cafgu and CVO were wounded, and civilians said that three from the rebels died while many others were wounded. (Edgar Fuerzas)
