AUTHORITIES will monitor organized crime groups that might be hired as private armies by politicians during the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections slated on October 2013.
Major Gen. Ariel B. Bernardo, chief of the Army's 10th Infantry Division, said they are preparing for the upcoming elections.
Bernardo, in an interview after a press conference on Thursday, said they are coordinating with the police as they have continued to work to ensure a peaceful, honest, and orderly barangay and SK elections.
"Though the barangay and SK election is different from the national election, we do not want to disregard any possibilities that might happen during the election. Posible rin kasi may initan o hidwaan sa pagitan ng mga kandidato in some barangays," Bernardo said.
He added that even if some areas in the Davao Region are peaceful like Davao City, it is still best for them, along with other government agencies, to be prepared and have tight security measures to ensure the safety of the public.
Authorities in the region earlier mapped out security measures that will be enforced during elections.
Police Regional Office-Davao Region director Wency T. Pascual earlier met with the directors of the Davao City Police Office, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental, and military regarding the preparations.
"The Philippine National Police has already activated 'Task Force Safe 2013' in preparation for the elections," Pascual said.
He said they tackled in a conference Wednesday, the identification of election hot spots, monitoring and neutralization of private armed groups and the accounting of loose firearms.
Pascual said they will also activate a task force that will look into the proliferation of loose firearms and dismantle the private armed groups in line with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) rules.
He added that there will be a 45-day Comelec gun ban that will take effect on September 28, 30 days before and 15 days after the election.
