TWO suspected communist rebels were killed in an encounter with government troops in the village of Ima in Sison town in Surigao del Norte on Friday.
The identities of the killed soldiers under the Army's 30th Infantry Battalion of the 4th Infantry Division have yet to be identified, said Captain Alberto Caber, chief of Eastern Mindanao Command's Public Information Office (Eastmincom-PIO).
Caber said the Army troops were conducting security patrol, following reports from concerned residents about the presence of the New People's Army (NPA) in the area, when they crossed path with the rebels.
An exchange of gunfires ensued that lasted for about 45 minutes, resulting to the death of the two communist rebels, while others withdrew and fled to unknown direction. No one was reportedly hurt on the government troops.
Caber said aside from the bodies of the two NPA rebels, troops also recovered four assault rifles, improvised explosive device, radios, medical kit, backpacks and subversive documents at the place of incident.
Lieutenant General Ricardo Rainier G. Cruz III, Eastmincom commander, said he thanked the residents who reported to them about the presence of the NPA rebels.
Cruz said he already instructed his men to continue conducting security patrol in the area and pursuit operation against the suspected rebels.
