THE City Government of Davao has given away a total of P915,000 to 76 retirees this year.
Those who served the City Government for 19 years and below got P5,000 each; P10,000 for those who served 20 to 29 years; P15,000 for 30 to 39 years; and P20,000 for 40 years and above.
"They have been working for the city for long, long time. It's only right to show our gratitude," city administrator Melchor Quitain said in an interview.
The city also hosted a send-off party for the 76 retirees at the Grand Men Seng Hotel Monday. Aside from cash gift, each received a plaque of appreciation.
"Even if you have retired, you are still Dabawenyos. Every now and then we might ask for your help, always be ready. As public servants, your service to the city does not end today, it will continue," Quitain told the retirees.
Ma. Elenita Jimenez, registration officer IV of the City Civil Registrar's Office, in her speech during the program in behalf of the other retirees, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the City Government.
"I am sure I will enjoy my retirement years, just as I enjoin my fellow retirees here to be involved in senior citizens programs in their community, because there is a saying ‘if you don't use it, you will lose it'", Jimenez said.
She added: "Di naming ito makakalimutan habang kami ay nabubuhay! I am trying to hold back my tears of sadness and joy. Daghang salamat sa inyong tanan."
