DAVAO CITY -- At least 13 mountaineers who were trapped Monday afternoon at the foot of Mt. Apo in Barangay Ilomavis in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato were rescued Tuesday.
First Lieutenant Nassrula Sema, Civil Military Operation (CMO) officer of the Army's 57th Infantry Battalion, refused to name the 13 mountaineers, as requested by the latter and the City Tourism Office (CTO) in Kidapawan.
"We have agreed with the city tourism not to name the mountaineers kasi ayaw din nung mga bata na mag-alala pa yung mga parents nila. So far, nasa mabuti naman ang kalagayan nung 13 mountaineers," Sema said.
Personnel of the CTO in Kidapawan, 911 Kidapawan and troops of the 57th Infantry were able to rescue the 13 mountaineers around 3 p.m. a day after they failed to return from scaling Mt. Apo.
Captain Raul Villegas, spokesperson for the 10th Infantry Division, said the group of locals from Mindanao provinces of Surigao and Davao, and Manila, climbed the peak last Friday and was supposed to be back by Sunday.
"But they (mountaineers) were not able to return on said schedule at the exit point and communications with them were lost, so a rescue team from Kidawapan City Government and the army's 57th Infantry Battalion launched a search and rescue," Villegas said.
According to the mountaineers, they preferred to stay in the area than to take the risk of crossing the strong current of the Marble River at Sitio Mandarangan.
Sema added, "The mountaineers were able to secure themselves."
Sema said the mountaineers were composed of seven females and six males in their 20s. He added that they were rescued and safely returned back to Kidapawan City in North Cotabato.
The 2,954-meter Mt. Apo, a potentially active strato volcano located between Mindanao regions of Davao and Cotabato, is popular among local and foreign climbers, as it is the highest mountain in the Philippines.
The business district of Kidapawan City is about 20 kilometers to the west of Mt. Apo. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
