ALMOST a hundred hopefuls for the barangay council posts mobbed former Davao City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio as she arrived at the Commission on Elections-Davao City office Tuesday morning, sending whispers that she was going to seek a barangay council position.
The crowd was one in their belief that she will be filing her certificate of candidacy (COC) when she arrived around 10 a.m. as her sister-in-law, Vice Mayor Paulo Z. Duterte’s, wife had earlier filed her COC to run as barangay chair of Catalunan Grande.
But Duterte-Carpio said she is not joining the race on October 28.
“Naay mga kandidato nga naghangyo nga ubanan gyud nako sila sa ilang pag file karong adlawa so nag gahin kog oras (There were some candidates who pleaded with me to accompany them as they file theirs, and so I came over),” Duterte-Carpio told reporters Tuesday.
She was with his husband, lawyer Mans Carpio.
“Naanad sila nga nakatutok ko sa ilang mga barangay for the past six years (They were used to my constant presence and monitoring for the past six years),” the former mayor said when egged on why these people, mostly seeking re-election, would want her there.
Duterte-Carpio said she is supporting the candidacy of Barangay 29-C barangay chief Estrella Ong and former councilor Angela Librado-Trinidad, who wants to lead Barangay 74-A.
Librado-Trinidad had expressed her bid to seek an elective post in the barangay level through her Facebook account on October 1.
“I write all these with the hope that in the next few days, I and all the candidates shall engage in real issues that matter to the people of Barangay Matina Crossing the most -- women's rights, women empowerment, employment and economic security for all, poverty alleviation, lack of social services, disaster preparedness and other social concerns,” Librado-Trinidad wrote in her FB account.
She added: “And as my track record in my nine years in the City Council would attest, I shall not only discuss these issues, I shall also engage government itself to address them.”
Duterte-Carpio said she will not only support Librado-Trinidad and Ong, but every barangay leader-candidate under the political party Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod.
It can be recalled that Duterte-Carpio was the former president of Hugpong but decided to resign from post, citing personal reasons.
