STOP. Arrest. Impound.
This is what Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte wants to motorcycle and vehicle of errant “uso-uso” drivers in Davao City.
“It’s time to stop. Arrest all uso-uso. I want it immediately,” Duterte told the heads of Highway Patrol Group, Land Transportation Office, Traffic Management Center, and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in a meeting at the Conference Room of the City Hall Monday afternoon.
The conference came after the city mayor personally arrested a driver of an “uso-uso” jeepney bound for Toril along Quimpo Boulevard for overloading, overspeeding, and driving with loud music.
The city mayor ordered the police and the military to impose stricter rules in regulating drivers who lurch their motorcycles and fail to observe traffic laws on prescribed speed limits on city’s thoroughfares.
“We have to protect lives. Never mind about properties,” Duterte said.
He directed them to assign personnel during daytime and night time to regularly monitor and implement proper speed limit.
“Wag kayo mag abuso dito, mga uso-uso, kasi maraming namamatay,” an irate Duterte said.
In the blotter report at the Matina Precinct, it was reported that the mayor’s men endorsed one Joven Cajapay Rojas, 29, driver of Toril-Roxas route jeepney at around 6:04 p.m. last October 7.
Uso-uso is the term used for the passenger jeepneys rigged with truck engines to make these run faster. Uso-uso, because of their bigger engines and matched with reckless driving, have been the public vehicles that have consistently figured in fatal road collisions in the city. (Arianne Caryl N.
