WITH Barangay 23-C set to be added as one of the areas of concern for the Oct. 28 barangay elections, 38 of its aspirants along with the officials of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) and Commission on Elections (Comelec)-Davao forged a peace covenant at the Sta. Ana Police Station Friday.
Four punong barangay aspirants and 34 barangay kagawads along with DCPO Director Ronald M. dela Rosa, Sta. Ana police station chief Caezar Cabuhat, and Comelec-Davao Election Officer Aimee Ampoloquio signed the Covenant for Peace and Cooperation during the Peace Forum and Covenant Signing at the Sta. Ana Police Station. The aspirants vowed to adhere to the guidelines set by the Comelec and cooperate with DCPO's Safe and Fair Elections (Safe) Campaign.
Representatives from the Department of Education, who are bound to serve as Board of Election Inspectors were invited during the covenant signing after some of them voiced their concerns of threats involving the aspirants of the said barangay.
Dela Rosa told the aspirants: "Nakita namo nga ang Brgy. 23-C is fast becoming an area of concern. Nahimo ning area of concern kay duna tay mga concern gikan sa Deped nga, matud pa nila, dili daw sila gusto magduty as BEI tungod naa silay kahadlok, Mao bitaw giimbitahan nato ang Deped para makita nila nga dili dapat sila mahadlok, (We have seen that Brgy. 23-C is fast becoming an area of concern since we have heard concerns from Deped that, according to them, they won't serve as BEIs since they are afraid. That is why we have invited Deped to show them that they shouldn't be afraid)."
"Despite the bad reputation of Brgy. 23-C due to the illegal drug trade, I am encouraging everybody to cooperate as we will make Brgy. 23-C as the model for a peaceful and successful election," the city police director said.
Ampoloquio, meanwhile, reiterated that aspirants should follow the guidelines in campaigning to avoid conflicts.
"Manumpa ta nga walay muatak sa personal lives kay mao gyud na ang makainit sa kampanya. Focus ta sa platform. Focus ta sa mga plano para sa kaayuhan sa barangay para maiwasan ang pagaway-away, (We pledge that no one will attack personal lives since this would heat things up during the campaign. Let's focus on the platform. Let's focus on the plans for the improvement of the barangay to avoid conflicts)," Ampoloquio said.
The election officer also urged candidates to discipline their supporters as the latter may also cause problems such as harassing the opponent's supporters and the Board of Election Tellers.
Dela Rosa, in an interview on the sideline of the forum and covenant signing, said Barangay 23-C may be added to the barangay election areas of concern in Davao City.
"I am recommending Brgy. 23-C to be added to the 11 areas of concern due to the intense political rivalry. It will then be finalized during the coming meetings with the city's Joint Security Coordinating Council," dela Rosa said.
