AT LEAST 28 houses were gutted down while six others were damaged in a fire that hit a community on V. Mapa Street, at Purok 6, Barangay 12-B, this city, on Thursday, leaving around 80 families homeless and three people injured.
Fire Officer 3 (FO3) Ramil Gillado, fire investigator of the Davao City Fire District's Investigation and Intelligence Section, said the blaze lasted for almost two hours before it was totally controlled.
He said the fire, believed to have been caused by faulty wiring, started around 10 a.m. at the house of barangay chief Nelia Tumabang.
"Based on the information we gathered, the cause of fire was due to electrical short circuit. It might be overloading or a grounded circuit that triggered the blaze. Pero yun nga lang, hindi pa namin matukoy kung ano talaga ang pinagmulan ng sunog," Gillado said.
"Ang sabi nagsimula yung sunog sa third floor ng bahay ni kapitan. inauupahan kasi itong bahay ni kap. We're still conducting investigation para matukoy kung ano yung pinagmulan nung sunog," he added.
Gillado identified the injured as Sheila Joy Pacquiao, 22; Socorro de Sales, 72; and Christian Serrano, 28, all residents of the area. However, the three are now out of danger.
He said around 80 affected families have been evacuated at the covered court and church nearby. The damage to properties was placed at P1.4 million.
Tumabang, in an interview over dxAB 1296's Bantay Patrol, said she was at the barangay hall when the incident happened.
She added that when she learned about the incident, she immediately ordered nearby residents to vacate their homes.
"Kahibalo nako naapil among balay. Ang akong huna-huna, lisod ang dalan dira, guot, kinahanglan na masecure una tanan. Pasalamat lang ko kay safe mi tanan," Tumabang said.
Firefighters from Davao City Fire District, Bureau of Fire Protection, Fire Volunteers, Central 911 Urban Search and Rescue, and Filipino Chinese Fire Fighter Brigades, among others, controlled the fire around 11:45 a.m.
Liwayway Caligdong, head of the City Social Services and Development Office, said their office will provide financial assistance after completing the list of the affected families.
"Sama sa atong naandan mo-pagawas dayon ta ug financial assistance para sa ila -- P10,000 para sa mga balay na totally damaged, P5,000 para sa partially damaged and P3,000 para sa mga renters," Caligdong said. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
