Duterte backs Bohol mayor over Red Cross rift-A A +A

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte assured former chief of staff and now Maribojoc Mayor Leoncio Evasco that he will always support him in his good governance.
Duterte gave this assurance following the flak Evasco earned for allegedly shooing the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) along with its chair Richard Gordon off his town for refusing to follow their centralized system of relief distribution.
“I support him all the way,” Duterte said, adding that what happened between the two leaders was just “an ocean of misunderstanding.”
Evasco reportedly told volunteers of the PRC to leave after they refused to hand over their items, after informing them of the municipality’s centralized distribution system for the quake victims last week.
“He (Evasco) means well. Hindi lang sila nagkaintindihan. Under stress yung tao eh. You have to consider,” Duterte said.
Evasco, a priest who turned rebel, served as Duterte’s chief of staff for almost two decades.
Knowing how Evasco handled the city departments, which he assigned him before, Duterte said he is confident that the Maribojoc mayor was “responsible to his people.”
“Kanya-kanya kasi ng istilo. He wants it that way. He was responsible to his people. He was elected by the people to guide and protect them. He has his way of doing things,” he said.
