AN EXECUTIVE of a homegrown shopping mall in Ma-a, Davao City clarified reports that the structure had incurred infrastructural damage due to the earthquake that hit several parts of Mindanao on Wednesday.

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Davao Region around 7:40 a.m.

Based on reports from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the earthquake was recorded 52 kilometers (km) southeast of Mati, Davao Oriental. The quake was tectonic in origin, and has a depth of 52 km.

Reports circulating on social networking site Facebook said the NCCC Mall Davao's third floor ceiling had collapsed due to the earthquake. A call center is housed on the same floor.

"That is not true, the ceiling did not collapse. The earthquake was quite abrupt, what actually happened was some ceiling materials like lights and insulation foams were dislodged. But right now, everything is fine and back to normal," NCCC public relations administrator Aileen Gajo said in an interview with Sun.Star SuperBalita.

In a separate interview with Sun.Star Davao, Gajo said around 15 to 20 insulation foams were dislodged from the ceiling.

"The insulation foams are not permanent, they can be moved anytime and if there are strong movements, it may be dislodged," Gajo said, adding some of the fluorescent lamps also moved but now are back in place.

Gajo added they requested an assessment from the City Building Office after seeing some cracks on their floors.

"They checked it already and they said that these were just minor damages. They also gave us instructions as to how we can repair these cracks," Gajo said.

Gajo assured shoppers that it is still safe to go to the mall and there is no need for worry.

Operations at the call center also returned to normal.

Intensity 5 was felt in Davao City and Mati City, Davao Oriental, while Digos City, Don Marcelino and Malita felt the quake at Intensity 4.

According to the Phivolcs website, most people indoor and outdoor could feel the shaking with a quake of that magnitude.

"Strong shaking and rocking felt throughout building. Hanging objects swing violently. Dining utensils clatter and clink; some are broken. Small, light and unstable objects may fall or overturn. Liquids spill from filled open containers. Standing vehicles rock noticeably. Shaking of leaves and twigs of trees are noticeable," it said.

Intensity 3 was felt in Butuan City, Kidapawan City, Tagum City, Panabo City, Compostela Valley, and Matanao.

Intensity 2 was felt in San Francisco, Agusan del Sur; Cotabato City, General Santos City, Koronadal City, Polomolok, South Cotabato; and Alabel, Sarangani.
