THE Davao City Council approved the night and weekend street markets that are expected to start anytime in December, throughout the Christmas season.

The city councilors unanimously voted in favor of the ordinance creating the policies and guidelines in the establishment of night and weekend street market in Davao City, following the endorsement from Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

City Demolition Unit head Yusuf Jimlani said the night market will be along Roxas Avenue, Ilustre Street, Governor Duterte Street, Aquino Street in Agdao, and Alvarez Street. It will be opened from Mondays to Fridays, from 4 p.m. until 12 midnight.

However, Councilor Bonifacio Militar earlier said using a public property for private purpose and for profit is prohibited under the law.

He added that he is not against the planned night market, which will provide jobs to people, but there are some provisions to be ironed out.

The weekend street market will be along the streets of San Pedro and Alvarez and will operate from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Jimlani said the ordinance does not mandate closing the entire stretch of the roads, but only portions of either left or right lanes.

He said each vendor is required to pay P4 per night for every 1.5-to-2-meter stall to the City Treasurer's Office.

Assistant city administrator Jhopee Avancena-Agustin said both the night and weekend street market will initially operate for three months.

Jimlani said 200 of the 800 vendors who applied for slots in the night market will vend for the first three months. The slots are not limited to Ukay-ukay, as street foods, among others, will also be sold.
