THE Davao City Council denied the applications of two memorial parks after it was found that the proposed locations are in identified water resrouce zone.
The application for special use permit (SUP) and preliminary approval and locational clearance (PALC) of Manila Memorial Park Cemetery Inc. and Forest Lake Development Inc. were not approved to protect the water resource area of Davao City.
Councilor Bernard Al-ag, chair for committee on housing and subdivision development, and his committee members recommended the denial of the applications considering the provisions under the approved Comprehensive Land Use Plan of Davao City, which states that “no cemetery/memorial park shall be located in the water resource area of the city.”
The Manila Memorial applied for an SUP to establish a memorial park in Barangay Tacunan, Tugbok District. This was already denied during the 16th City Council due to the same reason.
Al-ag said the application of Forest Lake for PALC of its project Forest Lake Premier-Ulas in Ulas, Talomo District is also nestled on the water resource area.
Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte earlier expressed his opposition to the proposals, considering the “risk” that the memorial parks might bring to the people of the third district.
“It’s on top of the aquifer. There will come a time when seepage will happen. Who wants to drink water that tastes like formalin?” Duterte said.
During the deliberation last Friday, Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang, chair for committee on environment, said he also supports the recommendation of the committee denying the applications.
