ANOTHER “Duterte” grabbed a seat at the City Council, as the wife of Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, Barangay Catalunan chief January Navares-Duterte, was elected as the Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) president on Wednesday.
"They (barangay captains) told me they want me for the position since I am allegedly capable of uniting them as what Paolo did when he was the Liga president," January said in the vernacular when asked what the barangay captains told her upon their manifestation of support.
January ran unopposed and garnered 166 votes during the election held at the Mezzanine Floor of the City Council Sunday morning.
A total of 167 barangay captains casted their votes.
Davao City has a total of 182 barangays. That means some 15 barangay chiefs were a no-show during the election.
January said she is taking the challenge although she is not that ready to seat at the City Council.
"The barangay captains personally relayed to Paolo that they wanted me to become the president. I was hesitant but we simply cannot decline since they also gave their all-out support during the mid-term elections for Paolo as the vice mayor," she said.
Barangay 5-A chief Edgar Ibuyan Jr. was elected as the vice president, defeating Barangay Ilang Arnulfo Cabling. Ibuyan got 102 votes, while Cabling got 58.
The elected ABC auditor was Barangay Buhangin Proper chief James Salvador, who also ran unopposed.
The elected board of directors were Barangay Governor Vicente Duterte Agdao chief Ernie Alterado (120 votes), Pedrito Angko of Calinan Proper and Alimodin Usman of Barangay 23-C (who both got 119 votes), Robert Mendoza of Barangay 27-C (113 votes), Artemio Jimenez of Talomo Proper (111 votes), Mar Masanguid of Barangay R. Castillo, Agdao (109 votes), Lilibeth Al-ag of Toril Proper (108 votes), Euphomia Baquirel of Barangay Mahayag, Bunawan (87 votes), and Rolando Bantayan of Barangay 32-D (with 80 votes).
After the election, the winners were proclaimed and took their oath of office before Municipal Trial Court in Cities Branch 7 presiding Judge Rufino Ferraris Jr.
Department of Interior and Local Government-Davao City director Merilo Limbaro was also present during the proclamation.
