Sunday, December 22, 2013
DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte called on traders on Saturday to stop rice smuggling, saying he will be forced to cancel business permits of those found guilty of the act.
"In the meantime that it is not yet clear to us whether it is legal or not, I'm asking everybody connected with smuggling, lalo na itong rice, to stop. Because once the BIR would ask for my help, I would be forced to cancel your business permit," Duterte said over his Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa show.
Earlier, Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares called the mayor to sought help regarding rice smuggling.
Duterte said Henares told him that Davao City is considered the "weakest link in raising revenue."
The mayor said he will answer the call of the National Government as he does not want Davao City to be tagged as “smuggling capital.”
He said he will be forced to even suspend the funds of smugglers if proliferation of smuggling rice continues.
"Pagka pumasok kayo diyan magkakagulo tayo dito. We will make your life miserable," he added.
