THREE taxicabs from Davao City were commandeered and burned by suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) in Panabo City, Davao del Norte Monday evening, just a few hours before the start of the 48-hour truce unilaterally declared by the rebel group.
Reports showed that about 10 people tried to hire 10 Holiday taxis, but were able to hire only three. The suspects then proceeded to Panabo City before identifying themselves as NPA rebels.
The suspects commandeered the vehicles and burned them thereafter. The taxi drivers were left unharmed.
Chief Superintendent Wency Pascual, Davao police regional director, said they had already talked with the owner of the taxi fleet who denied receiving extortion letter from the NPA rebels.
The police director said it could be highly possible that the suspects are plain and simple extortionists and are only using the name of the NPA for their illegal activity.
Pascual said a sketch artist is already talking to the three taxi drivers for the identification of the suspects.
