THE 10th Infantry Division (10th ID) of the Philippine Army tallied a total of 207 atrocities perpetrated by the New People's Army (NPA) for this year.
Spokesperson for the 10th ID Capt. Ernest Carolina, in an e-mail to Sun.Star Davao, said this year's total number of atrocities has significantly increased compared to last year's total of 114.
He cited that landmine detonation and business establishment and equipment burning made the bulk of the total number of atrocities followed by abductions, encounters and extortions.
Carolina noted that the NPA has detonated a total of 29 landmines. The third quarter had the most number of landmine detonations with 12 cases followed by the fourth quarter with eight. There were four cases of landmine detonation in the first quarter and five on the second quarter.
He also said that a total of 23 cases of arson were staged by the communist rebels. Twenty-three of which were the burning of properties and business establishments while nine were construction equipments.
Carolina said the increase of the atrocities is due to the desperate measure of the communist to gain funds through their revolutionary tax.
"We could attribute this to the awareness of the people to the true objectives of the NPA. There is an increasing awareness and defiance of the people to the NPA's monetary demands in order to cut support. They react to this with violence as their doctrine suggests," Carolina said.
He added that the midterm elections last May 10 and the barangay polls last October 28 paved the way for communist rebels to shakedown election aspirants within their areas.
