KIDAPAWAN CITY -- Three persons were killed and two others were wounded when two feuding families clashed Thursday afternoon in the province of Cotabato.
Two of those killed were identified as Daniel Bagnier and Anaruddin Sambayan, both members of the Civilian Volunteer Organization (CVO), while the other casualty was a member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
The two wounded were also members of the MILF.
Colonel Dickson Hermoso, 6th Infantry Division Philippine (6ID) Army spokesman, said that the groups of barangay chairman Renz Tucuran and Commander Abas Kudanding of the 105th Base Command of the MILF encountered each other, leading to the shooting.
The fighting worsened when armed members of both groups arrived to the scene.
Seven houses were destroyed after being hit by bullets from the long firearms used by the parties involved in the incident. Twelve families evacuated the area out of fear of being caught in the crossfire.
Captain Tucuran said they were the first to be fired upon by the group of Kudanding but the latter said Tucuran's CVO forces were the ones who fired first.
North Cotabato Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza, MILF officials and Muslim elders have moved to resolve the personal vendetta between the family of Tucuran and Kudanding.
