THE National Police Commission (Napolcom) office in Davao Region reported that 27 Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel are currently under preliminary investigation.
Randy F. Babao, of Napolcom-Davao and who guested in Monday's edition of Davao Press Club's Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao Annex, said most of their cases included personnel who were unaccounted for during audits and inspection, those who failed to present their firearms during audits or inspections, and those who have been complained of for violence against women and children (VAWC).
Babao said many of these cases were VAWC related, wherein mostly are economic abuse. He said the economic abuse refers to the failure of the PNP personnel to provide financial assistance to the family.
"However, most of these cases never materialize into court since they are usually resolved. We bring the parties together for a dialogue then come up with a compromised agreement," he said.
Lorna Mandin, head of the Davao City Integrated Gender Development Division, said most of the reports they get on economic abuse from military and firemen comprises 83 percent to 85 percent of the reports they are getting.
She said the wives or the children report to them that the men are not providing them support for basic necessities like food, electricity, water, and education, among others.
Mandin said they have recorded 45 to 46 reports of police officers abusing their wives or children for 2013, while they recorded 68 cases of men in uniform abusing their children or wife.
Aside from the 27 personnel who are in preliminary investigation, Napolcom also reported eight others who have pending administrative cases.
"If these eight are proven guilty, they may face suspension, demotion, or dismissal," Babao said.
