THE Commission on Higher Education (Ched) in Davao said it will be phasing out 13 different programs in various higher education institutions (HEIs) in the region.

Ched-Davao Acting Regional Director Raul C. Alvarez Jr., who was a guest in Friday's Hermes Club press forum at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao, said they have phased out around 13 programs in the region that did not pass the standards of Ched.

"For the protection of the public, we are rigid with the monitoring and evaluation of programs among the HEIs in the region. As a result, we are able to close down programs that do not adhere with our standards," he said.

Alvarez said there are different standards for each program.

He said some of the programs include agriculture, social sciences, and nursing courses. He did not divulge details on what HEIs were ordered to stop their programs.

He said they begin with the evaluation of the programs based on the criteria or standards per program.

Alvarez said if the result of the evaluation reveals that the program is non-compliant, the HEI will be given time to correct or rectify it and subject for a second evaluation.

If the program is still deemed to be non-compliant, he said they will recommend a phasing out of the program, and if the institution still continues to offer the program and is still not at par with the standards, they will be ordered to phase out the program.

He also said they will be phasing out some programs in some institutions that are not already in demand. He cited nursing as an example wherein some HEIs have already volunteered to phase out the course due to low enrollment.
