ALERT level has been raised in Davao Region as the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) celebrates its 45th Anniversary today, March 29.
Davao Police Regional Office spokesperson Chief Inspector Jed Clamor said Friday that though there were no major threats monitored, the police and military still placed Davao Region under full alert status.
Clamor said personnel of the city and provincial police offices, including the barangay, have been briefed to be more cautious for NPA activities.
The police authorities were directed by PRO Regional Director Wency Pascual to intensify their security operations in all aspects, he added.
Davao City Police Office, Davao del Sur Provincial Police Office, Davao del Norte Provincial Police Office, Compostela Valley Provincial Police Office, Davao Oriental Provincial Police Office, and all police supporting units were mandated to conduct maximum police visibility so as to avoid any untoward incidents.
"We can assure a 24/7 random checkpoints in all entry and exit points [Davao Region and nearby areas]. We'll also continue our foot and mobile patrols in coordination with the troops of the Army's 10th Infantry Division," Clamor said.
Davao del Sur Governor Claude Bautista, in an interview with him earlier, said he has instructed the authorities to place the province under heightened alert status, especially that there are four guerilla fronts operating in the area.
"Isa lang man unta na sa una. Natingala man mi from front 51 naa na'y front 71, 72 and 53 nga wala man untay report sa pag pangabuso sa maong probinsya (There used to be just one front before. Now we are surprised how from just Front 51, there are now Fronts 71, 72 and 53, when there are no apparent abuses reported in the province). In fact, we in the local government are addressing the concern of the Davao del Sur residents," Bautista said.
Bautista directed all mayors in the province to intensify their support and cooperation with the law enforcers in tightening security in each city and municipality against various movements of the communist rebels and other so-called lawless elements.
Philippine Army's 10th Infantry Division commander Major General Ariel Bernardo, in a separate interview, told Sun.Star Davao that all security preparations are in place following the series of landmine explosions in some areas in Mindanao.
"We have proactive security preparations to preempt, disrupt, and neutralize any possible movements from the communist rebels. Tuloy-tuloy ang aming implementation of not only our security measures but also the peace and development outreach program. Of course, target hardening and monitoring is there," Bernardo said.
The CPP-NPA, in a statement sent through email, said the NPA guerrillas will celebrate their 45th anniversary by firing their guns in the air.
The firing of guns, also known as 21-gun salute, will be staged by the NPA where applicable and if the situation allows, the statement added.
The 21-gun salute will be held in various undisclosed areas in the country as tribute to all martyrs of the NPA and the "national democratic revolution."
The CPP-NPA also said that the March 29 anniversary will be commemorated in the wake of the arrest of its leaders Benito and Wilma Tiamzon in Cebu. (ICT/Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
