AUTHORITIES are hot on the trail of suspected New People's Army (NPA) members who allegedly burned down four heavy equipment trucks and a pick-up owned by mining company at Sitio Sawmill, Barangay Masara, Maco, Compostela Valley Province on Thursday.

Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) chief of the Public Information Office Captain Alberto Caber told Sun.Star Davao that the communist rebels set ablaze a boom truck, pay loader, an Elf truck, a backhoe, and a Toyota Hilux pick-up owned by the APEX Mining Company.

The arson took place around 2:30 p.m. at the motor pool of the mining company.

He also said that based on the accounts of the nearby residents, there were some 50 communist rebels who entered the premises of the mining company. The communist rebels reportedly withdrew towards Barangay New Leyte after the incident.

He added that they are currently conducting a pursuit operation along with the local police of Maco while the 9th Infantry Battalion, who covers part of Maco in their area of responsibility, is also assisting in the pursuit.

“The government and its concerned agencies like the AFP and PNP are mandated to protect all legal business establishments like the APEX mining,” Eastmincom commander Lt. Gen. Ricardo Rainier Cruz said.
