Dole regional director Joffrey Suyao, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao at Gaisano Mall of Davao, said that last year around 6,000 to 7,000 applicants applied in the job fair. He added that they are hoping that the number will exceed this year.

A total of 8,446 job vacancies were up for grabs from 160 local employers while there were 21,370 job vacancies from 66 overseas employers.

Richie Villanueva, 23, was one of the few who was hired on the spot. He was hired as a systems engineer for Gakken Philippines Inc.

"I was nervous when I applied but now I am very happy because I got my first job just right after college," he said.

"I was here since 8 a.m. and it is very overwhelming because I got hired on the spot. It was worth the wait," said Mirasol Miraflores, 19, and a fresh graduate. She was hired as a cashier at GMall Department Store.

Rosaleta dela Torre, 30, also patiently waited on the line since 8 a.m. Her patience paid off and was hired on the spot as a cashier at Gmall Department Store. She said she is happy and excited.

There were also those who patiently waited to land a job.

"Kapoy kaayo, taas ang pila, pero ing-ani man gyud, (It is very tiring with the long lines but it is always like this.)," said Paul Bontog, 23, a fresh graduate who hopes to land a job related to his course, Information Technology.

"Okay raman, anad naman ko ani, sige nako pangita ug work, and common jud ang kapoy (I am used to things like this because I keep on looking for a job and being tired is just a common thing)," said Baby Joy Buneid, 31, who is applying for a business accounting job.

Suyao said they are seeing a lot of applicants early on the fair.

"At SM City Davao we began accomodating the pre-registered applicants as early as 9 a.m. to cater to the number of applicants coming," he said.

He also said compared to last year they made the fair as much as comfortable as possible. He said they have separated the areas for local employers, overseas employers, and the one-stop shop.

"For example at Gaisano Mall, all local employers are at the Atrium, the overseas are at the lower ground floor while the one-stop shop is above," he said.

Suyao said the event will also help facilitate the easy meeting of employers and applicants.

The Job Fair is part of the agency's celebration of the 112th Labor Day. The fair was also held at Gaisano Mall of Tagum to cater to applicants from Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, and Davao Oriental.
