A RADIO anchor of the University of Mindanao Broadcasting Network (UMBN) Radyo Ukay-Digos City was gunned down while his partner was injured by motorcycle riding gunmen near his residence at Del Pilar St., Digos City on Friday.

Killed in the incident was Sammy Oliverio, 57, while injured is Rowena Baylosis, 59.

Based on the testimony of some witnesses, two unidentified gunmen onboard a black Honda Wave motorcycle were already waiting for the victims around 5 p.m.

Police investigation revealed that the victims were already on their way home after coming from the Digos City Public Market.

Oliverio was killed on the spot after succumbing to two gunshot wounds on his neck while one of the bullets grazed the knee of Baylosis.

Scene of the Crime Operatives responded at the crime scene and recovered two empty shells of caliber .45 pistol.

The last radio commentary stint of Oliverio was two months ago after he decided to quit due to health reasons.

The relatives of Oliverio suspect that the motive of the killing was due to his hard-hitting commentaries on illegal drugs and the public officials who are involved in it.

Oliverio also criticized some officials who are involved in the handling of illegal gambling.

But Digos City information officer Bert Zamora could not believe that Oliverio was killed because of his commentaries since his partner-on-air Jun Gloria criticizes more.

Davao del Sur Provincial Police Office (DSPPO) Director Michael John Dubria said he already ordered the setup of checkpoints.

“We have conducted checkpoints to all nearby municipalities in which possibly the suspects will pass through,” Dubria told Sun.Star Davao Superbalita.

Oliverio is the third media practitioner killed in Digos City since 2006.

In 2006, dxDS radio broadcaster Armando Pace was killed by motorcycle riding gunmen when he was on his way home.

In 2010, Nestor Bedolido, a reporter for the weekly tabloid Kastigador, was also gunned down while he was about to buy cigarettes from a store near his home.

One of the suspects in the shooting of Bedolido identified as Henry Mirafuentes was arrested by operatives of the Eastern Mindanao Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (EastMin CIDU) around 1:30 p.m. in an alleged safe house in Mintal, Davao City.

Mirafuentes was arrested by virtue of a warrant of arrest issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 19 Executive Judge Carmelita Sarno-Davin for the murder of Bedolido.

The suspect is currently detained at the EastMin CIDU detention facility within the Davao City Police Office headquarters. (With reports from Ruji Peter S. Abat)
