DAVAO -- Three people were killed while 26 others were injured after a trailer truck they were riding plunged into a river in Barangay Sinuda, Kitaotao town in Bukidnon on Sunday.
One of the three fatalities was identified as Ruth Rubino, of Compostela Valley.
Authorities have yet to identify the two other fatalities.
Initial report from Central 911 Davao City, which responded to the scene of the incident, said that of those injured, three are in critical condition.
The victims were brought to Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) in Davao City.
Those in critical condition were identified as Rubelyn Costudio, 15, of Mawab, Compostela Valley; Argie Anol; and Welfredo Anib, 47, of Sto. Tomas in Davao del Norte.
Based on the initial report of the Kitaotao Municipal Police Station, the incident happened around 5:45 p.m. at Simud River in Sinuda.
The 29 passengers on board the truck were on their way home to Davao City from a week-long Sabbath School Congress in Valencia town in Bukidnon when the incident happened.
In a phone interview with Bombo Radio Davao on Monday, Levi Custodio, one of the truck passengers, said the truck fell into the river after its driver, identified as Renel Dungol, lost control of the brake.
Levi said the driver had three options before the incident: whether to hit another vehicle in front of them, drove straight to the mountain, or plunged into a river, which the driver did, hoping to avoid casualties.
Authorities are already conducting investigation on whether the incident happened due to human or mechanical error.
Meanwhile, a motorcycle driver died while four others were hurt in a separate vehicular accident in Tibungco in Davao City around 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
Police identified the fatality as Roque Puersas, driver of the Honda XRM motorcycle without a plate number, while those hurt were identified as Rubencio Ibañez, driver of Honda Wave motorcycle with a plate number 8161, and three passengers Joeber Bugias, Jemmar Petiluna, and Junnel Lampara.
Initial investigation conducted by the Bunawan Police Station showed the two motorcycles were traveling to opposite direction.
Puersas, who was on his way to west side, maneuvered left to overtake ahead a vehicle in front of him, but instead, he bumped into the motorcycle driven by Ibañez, who was headed east.
The four injured were brought to Southern Philippines Medical Center. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
