DAVAO -- Calls for Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to run for president in 2016 is going strong despite the mayor's continued refusal to the growing clamor.

Latest to meet with Duterte to urge him to run was prominent Mindanaoan Reuben Canoy of the Radio Mindanao Network, the largest radio network in the Philippines.

Canoy and Duterte had a closed-door meeting at the Marco Polo Hotel Thursday evening along with former Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) secretary Pantaleon Alvarez.

When they came out from the meeting, Duterte was overheard as telling Canoy to just look for someone they could all support come 2016.

Canoy and Duterte refused to give any detail on their meeting.

Last week, former Senate President Aquilino Pimentel Jr., ex-Misamis Oriental governor Homobono Adaza, and Reuben Canoy agreed that it's high time for a Mindanaoan president to lead the country come 2016.

The three Mindanaoan freedom fighters were one in saying that the people of Mindanao must stick together and put a Mindanaoan in Malacañang.

Canoy said Mindanao needs a person who is very active and with character.

He said Duterte "shows certain qualities that would make him a good executive."

Canoy, in a statement, said, "We have a possible candidate plus a good base in Visayas and Mindanao. I think this is the candidate that can carry the Cebuano/Visayan votes, this is the candidate that can carry the Mindanao votes."

Adaza said the country needs a leader who is not just from Mindanao but who has the right attitude and mindset, as well.

He described this leader as someone who has a vision, who knows what to do.

"Ang kailangan ng bansa ay isang lider na may utak sa bayag at may bayag sa utak -- brains with balls and balls with brains," Adaza said.

Pimentel, on the other hand, said it is too early to tell who is that Mindanaoan leader apt for the position. He agreed though that "Duterte has the qualities to run for the highest office.

"The mayor (Duterte) is a good prospect, because the elections in 2016 is still far off, and anything can come up between now and 2016. We should look for a Mindanao leader, definitely. I believe in him (Duterte) but it’s too early in the game to say that," Pimentel said. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
