City spends millions for garbage trucks-A A +A

THE City Government of Davao is spending millions of money as rental fee for garbage trucks monthly, an official of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) said.
Cenro officer-in-charge Engr. Elisa P. Madrazo said the city government has only three city-owned vehicles used for the collection of garbage - two garbage trucks and a compactor.
Hence, most of the trucks used are privately-owned.
Madrazo said the rental fee for a truck deployed in Poblacion area is P20 per kilometer per day.
In Lasang, she said the city spends P20,000 per day.
Meanwhile, in Calinan District, the rental fee per month reaches as high as P1 million.
"Ang arkila magdepende man gud sa kalayo, per kilometer siya," she said.
"Mao na akong gusto ma realize sa barangay. Dili pud siguro ta mugasto ug dako sa basura man lang. Tabang pud unta ang mga taga barangay (That's what I want the barangay to realize. We just couldn't spend so much for garbage. Those in the barangay should also help)," Madrazo said.
Cenro, thus, wants reinforcement from the barangay in terms of garbage collection.
Madrazo said the city used to have four compactors but three of these are under repair.
"Murag natiguwang na pud. Hapit na retirement (These under repair compactors are nearing retirement)," she jested.
The Cenro deploys 70 trucks every morning and 30 in the evening, according to Madrazo.
"Nakurat na mi. Dapat mag garbage collection fee na ta uy. Mao na akong gusto marealize sa barangay (We were shocked. We must start collecting garbage fees. That's what I want the barangays to realize),' she said.
Cenro has 500 garbage collectors, 300 sweepers, and 250 gardeners.
