Car crash kills Public Works official

DAVAO – An official of the regional office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) was killed, while two other personnel of the agency were injured, after the vehicle they were riding crashed along the national highway in Barangay Buso in Mati City on Thursday.

The victims came from a project visit in Barangay Tagbinowa in Mati City and were on their way back to Davao City when the incident happened.

Mati City Police Office (MCPO) Director Superintendent Benito O. Recopuerto identified the fatality as DPWH regional information officer Jose Dennis Ytac Flores.

Flores is a resident of GSIS Heights in Matina, Davao City.

Those injured were Elmer Simbanagan Jr. and Ysser Pelotos Duaran, both employees of DPWH-Davao Region.

Recopuerto said the vehicle involved was a Navarra Frontier with plate number LGE-161 driven by Mark Anthony Sayson Hidalgo.

He added that the accident happened around 12 noon while the victims were on their way back to Davao City from Barangay Tagbinowa in Mati City.

"[To make it clear] wala sila nahulog sa bangin. Nahulog ang sakyanan sa shoulder sa kalsada nawala na control sa driver mao to nideretso punuan sa lubi. Ang bangga naka-pabor sa passenger front seat at the right side mao namatay si Mr. Flores," Recopuerto said.

Recopuerto added that based on police initial investigation, Hidalgo fell asleep as he was driving along the highway.

"We will conduct further investigation. If sakali may complainant, we will file charges against the driver," he said.

Simbanagan was brought to Tagum City Hospital, while Duaran is now undergoing treatment at the Southern Philippines Medical Center in Davao City.

The cadaver of the victim was brought to Angel Funeral Homes, while the driver is now temporarily detained at the Mati City Police Office. (Sun.Star Davao)
