A CITY councilor on Wednesday said the reinforcement of the recently-hired 900 barangay tanods (village watchmen) to the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) will help curb criminalities in villages.
City Councilor Edgar Ibuyan Sr. said it is high time that barangay tanods will assist the DCPO in maintaining peace and order in the barangay level.
"Naga taas napud ang krimen sa mga barangay (Crimes are high in the barangays)," he said.
He said although tanods are not allowed to carry firearms, rigid trainings are needed to hone them in arresting criminals like akyat bahay gang and pickpockets, among others.
City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte created a peace and order unit in each barangay to curb the proliferation and increasing threat of drugs, theft and other crimes.
The peace and order unit in each barangay is composed of not more than five members of barangay tanods who are entitled to a monthly honorarium of P6,000 chargeable against the peace and order fund of the city.
The tanods, however, will be under the general supervision and control of the DCPO.
The members are presently undergoing "rigid screening process and training" by the DCPO.
