CHARGES were filed before the City Prosecutor's Office on Friday against a couple accused of stealing around P8.8 million worth of jewelry in a pawnshop in Bankerohan, Davao City.

Vilma Rodriguez Oliver, 45, manager of the pawnshop, and her husband Hinerich Pelenio Oliver, 41, both residents of Lote-Lote in Barangay Tigatto in Buhangin District, were charged with qualified theft.

Based on the Davao City Police Office's Investigation and Detection Management Branch (DCPO-IDMB), the couple was arrested on Thursday at Sitio San Roque in Barangay Balaoro, Kandilingan, Bukidnon.

IDMB case-tracker SPO3 Jeffrey Bangcas said the operation was launched after Abella reported that Vilma was seen taking away assorted jewelry from their pawnshop without her consent.

The authorities endorsed the suspects to DCPO around 1 p.m. after they were arrested in Bukidnon at 6:30 a.m. of August 28.

Recovered from the suspects' possession were some of the looted assorted jewelry worth around P2 million, several pawn papers from various pawnshops, and P55,405.55 cash in different dominations.

During the police interrogation, the victim checked on the looted items and found out that several fake jewelry were only recovered from the suspects.

Further investigation revealed that the couple connived with each other in stealing the pawned jewelry and pawned them to other pawnshops as showed from the recovered pawn papers named to Hinerich.

Police learned that it was Vilma who took the pawned items and replaced these with fake ones to make it appear that the vault has not been touched.

Bangcas said it was also learned that Vilma intentionally replaced the padlocks of the victim's pawnshop. He added that when they conducted investigation in the shop, some jewelry were still left inside. (ICT)
