80 pawikan hatchlings welcome Kadayawan Festival

Saturday, August 22, 2015

DAVAO. Davao Light and Power Co. and representatives from different groups join together for the releasing of the baby pawikans the same day the Kadayawan Festival starts. This is the 3rd batch of pawikan hatchlings released for this year.

JUST in time for the start of the 30th Kadayawan Festival last August 17, 80 pawikan eggs were hatched in the Cleanergy Park in Punta Dumalag, Matina Aplaya in Davao City.

These hatchlings, which were fondly called as "Kadayawan Pawikan babies," came from the 3rd nest with 121 eggs found last June 16, 2015.

A low hatching rate was expected from this batch of eggs as these were hit by the monsoon waves. The eggs were soaked into the water before these were transferred to the hatchery.

Fortunately, the final turnout was good with a 66 percent hatching rate. The interventions made by Fermin Edillon, Davao Light's Community Relations (ComRel) Manager, and his team helped a lot in saving the eggs.

Later in the afternoon of the same day, Edillon together with Davao Light engineer Herbert Lariego and ComRel project staff Sherilyn Puno released the hatchlings to the sea.

They were joined by Grand Regal Hotel owner Barbara Gaisano-Chua with her family, Grand Regal Hotel personnel, assistant manager for admin of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Glenn Gadia, Southern Motors Inc. officer Kim Liu and DENR officer Rey Coligado.

Another batch of Pawikan eggs is expected to hatch before the month ends.
