A TOTAL of four incest cases involving children of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in Davao City are now being assisted by Mindanao Migrants Center for Empowering Actions, Inc (MMCEI).
MMCEI executive director Inorisa Elento said in an interview with SunStar Davao Friday, April 21, that aside from sexual abuses, they also recorded rape cases, teenage pregnancy, and juvenile delinquency among OFW children in 12 communities in Davao.
"We have recorded seven cases of teenage pregnancy this year and the youngest is 13 years old," she said.
Elento, who was the speaker in the 1st quarter meeting of the Barangay Council for the Protection of Children of 182 villages in the city held Friday, urged officials to note the population of children of OFW.
"We do not have an actual list of the children of OFW, which we need to note so that we can see how many incidents of abuses," Elento said.
She said they have recorded children of OFW involved in drug abuse.
She added that they operate in 12 communities. Among the 12 are Calinan, Los Amigos, Tugbok, Catalunan Pequeño, Bago Aplaya, two villages in Talomo, Matina, SIR, and Bucana.
Elento said that primary reasons of the abuses include weak relationships of the guardians and the children.
Mae Aquino, the secretariat of Davao City Children Welfare's Council, meanwhile, said that she intentionally invited Elento in the meeting so that they would include care of the OFW children in their scope of accountability.
"We have seen a lot of OFW children which are abandoned, and if not abandoned, they were the last to receive services as the family they are living with secures first the needs of their own children," she said.
