13 Davao barangays recommended as drug-free

Saturday, May 20, 2017

THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Davao Region said that 13 out of 180 barangays in Davao City have been recommended as drug-free communities.

PDEA-Davao Director Adzhar Albani said on Friday that the clearing of some barangays in the city is underway for those who is deemed qualified to be declared as drug-free barangays due to absence of drug-related activities.

"We are clearing some barangays in a few days from now," Albani said.

However, he did not disclose these barangays since assessment is ongoing, saying that the declaration of these barangays as drug-free was halted due to the amended regulations and parameters of the Dangerous Drug Board (DDB) before a certain area will be declared as drug-free.

It was previously reported that there were around 31 barangays that were already cleared but it was revisited because of the new and additional requirements set by the DDB.

"We are just waiting for the clearance of the signatories, kasi there are seven signatories now in the barangay clearing operations," he said.

Among these are the chief of Police certified by the mayor, PDEA, the Department of Health (DOH) and Department of Interior Local Government (DILG) who are responsible of validating the documents before declaring the barangays as drug-free once they completed and passed the parameters.

"It's not for the sake of clearing the barangay but it is an honest to goodness clearing," he said.

To be declared as drug-free barangay, there must be non-availability of drug supply, absence of drug transshipment activity, clandestine drug laboratory, marijuana cultivation site, drug den, drug pushers, drug use or dependent, coddler and financier.

The programs of the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council on the war on drugs will also be evaluated.
