DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said the signing of the Executive Order (EO) 26, which prohibits smoking in all public places nationwide, is a welcome development.
Duterte-Carpio said on Friday that the EO addresses not just the health concern of smokers but also of their families.
"It is a welcome development to our country especially with regard to the intervention sa increasing addiction sa smoking sa Filipino, and of course, intervention sa dili gusto manigarilyo pero biktima sa secondhand smoking ang ilang pamilya ug kauban nila sa komunidad (It is a welcome development to our country with regards to the intervention to the increasing addiction of many Filipinos to smoking and of course intervention to those who do not smoke but victims of second hand smoke, their families and immediate communities)," she said.
Duterte added that in Davao City, anti-smoking ordinance has been in place for years now and the city is conducting activities that are required to curb smoking.
"In fact, everyday our police stations have accomplishments in apprehending smoking ban violators," she said.
In previous reports, the newly-formed Davao City Vice Regulation Unit has recorded 4,487 apprehensions since it started last April 3, 2017.
Duterte-Carpio created the unit to strictly enforce ordinances that contain provisions against smoking and selling of alcoholic beverages in the city.
